The main variable is substitution, not production by itself. Put simply, making more cultivated meat is not enough. The real test is whether it replaces slaughtered meat instead of just adding another option to the menu. That’s the point where welfare gains start to mean something in practice.

Meatly’s cultivated chicken was authorised for pet food in 2024 and reached retail shelves in 2025.[30][34] The FSA also secured £1.6 million from the Engineering Biology Sandbox Fund to launch a safety programme in March 2025. Scale-up is still one of the biggest sticking points. Most UK facilities operate at 50 to 5,000 litres.
